Three Highland Prep West students, Carter Watson, Jonathon Mak, and Fabian Vega, have taken the initiative to create a new club, SPEC (Science Programming Engineering Club), where students can collaborate on individual interest projects in STEM fields. Recognizing the need for a space where like-minded students could work together on projects, the trio successfully gathered interest from fellow students and secured teacher advisors to launch the club this fall.
The idea for SPEC was born out of the founders' own experiences trying to work on personal STEM projects at home, where resources and collaboration were limited. "We knew more people would have interest in it, considering we're a STEM-based school and most of us really enjoy coding and designing for fun," shared Carter. The club aims to provide a study hall-style setting where students can work on experiments, engineering projects, or other STEM-related activities. SPEC meets on Mondays and Thursdays afterschool, providing a regular opportunity for students to come together and work on their projects. Currently, the founders are using club time to build a video game from scratch.
We applaud Carter, Jonathon, and Fabian for their hard work and innovative spirit in creating a club that didn't previously exist at Highland Prep West.
